How Does Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery Work?

Our doctors use different techniques for eyelid surgery depending on whether we need to remove the excess skin from the upper or lower eyelid.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

The blepharoplasty procedure to address the upper eyelid includes an incision in the natural creases, removing fat, and trimming extra skin. This incision is closed with fine sutures.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

We use two techniques to address the area below the eye. Which one we use on a patient depends on whether we need to remove excess skin. If there is no need for skin removal, we generally use a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. We move the excess fat and tighten the skin using non-surgical methods.

If we need to remove excess skin, we use an open blepharoplasty. In this procedure, we make an incision along the lower lashes, remove the fat and skin, and close the incision with absorbable stitches.

Who Are the Candidates for Eyelid Surgery?

 

Patients who undergo cosmetic eyelid surgery are often 40 to 60 years old, although many fall outside these parameters. Before scheduling the procedure, patients must receive a complete medical and ophthalmologic exam.

In some cases, other medical conditions could affect your ability to undergo this procedure. However, we will discuss your medical history with you and may be able to help even if you have:

 

  • Dry eyes and use eye drops
  • A family history of glaucoma
  • Thyroid or other endocrine concerns
  • Severe allergies that cause ocular symptoms
  • Collagen vascular disease
