Hyperhidrosis

Everybody sweats to cool their bodies. However, some people still sweat when they’re not even hot, nervous, or exercising. This excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, can be embarrassing and anxiety-inducing. If you suffer from this condition, the doctors at Palm Beach Dermatology Group can use their experience, compassion, and expertise to form a treatment plan to tackle your hyperhidrosis.

Depending on the severity of your condition, we may suggest special antiperspirants or surgical procedures to fix it. Connect with our practice today at (561) 421-4143. During your initial appointment, we can discuss the details of your hyperhidrosis and how it’s affected your life.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Hyperhidrosis

The number one symptom of hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating, typically in both underarms, hands or feet, or the face. Those dealing with this condition may experience at least one episode of excessive sweating per week

Mayo Clinic recommends that you seek medical attention if:

  • You feel dizzy from the heavy sweating.
  • You experience a rapid pulse while sweating.
  • You suffer pain in the arms, chest, jaw, throat, or shoulders.
  • Your skin feels cold while sweating heavily.
  • You start sweating out of nowhere or more than usual.
  • The sweating affects your day-to-day life.
  • The excessive sweating has caused you social anxiety or emotional distress.

How Our Doctors May Test
You for Hyperhidrosis

When you come to Palm Beach Dermatology Group for your first appointment, we want to hear every detail about your hyperhidrosis, the extent of it, and other symptoms that accompany it, if any.

In addition, we may run some lab tests to see if any other medical complications could be causing or at least contributing to your excessive sweating, such as hypoglycemia or hyperthyroidism. We may also have you undergo a sweat test, an iodine starch test, and/or another evaluation to determine the severity of your condition.

With Palm Beach Dermatology Group, you won’t have to wait weeks and weeks to get the results. We understand that you want to know the root issue of what’s going on, so we pride ourselves on quick follow-ups with all we do for patients, especially when it comes to test results.

Methods

We Can Incorporate a Variety of Methods
to Treat Your Hyperhidrosis

The information we gather from you, as well as the test results, can help us build your treatment plan, which may incorporate:

Antiperspirant:
We may prescribe a special deodorant that contains aluminum chloride. Apply it to dry skin before you go to bed and rinse it off when you wake up. After using it for a few days, you should notice a difference. You can slowly transition from using it every day to once or twice a week.

Botox injections:
These injections in the affected areas will help block nerves associated with sweat glands. Similar to the deodorant, you’ll start to see a difference within a few days. To maintain the effect of the injections, your doctor may instruct you to receive the injections every six months or so.

Creams and wipes:
We may prescribe creams containing glycopyrrolate to ease excess sweating around the face and head. If you experience hyperhidrosis in the underarms, hands, or feet, we could write a prescription for wipes saturated in glycopyrronium tosylate.

Oral medications:
Antidepressants and nerve-blocking medicine can keep nerves from triggering sweat glands.
Procedures

Surgical Procedures

We may also recommend you undergo procedures, such as:

  • Microwave therapy: A handheld instrument called miraDry will transmit microwave energy to destroy the sweat glands in the affected area. You may need to undergo two 30-minute treatments, three months apart.
  • Sweat gland removal: This procedure is only for patients who experience hyperhidrosis in their underarms. We may perform it via scraping or suctioning the glands away.
  • Iontophoresis: Here, you put your hands and feet in a tub of water. A machine will deliver a low electric current through the water. This transmission will help block sweat glands. Each session should take no longer than 20 or 30 minutes. You may require multiple sessions, depending on how well you respond to the treatment.

If you’ve tried every medication and procedure, but you’re still not seeing results, we may recommend you have a sympathectomy. Note that this method is usually for those with the most severe cases of hyperhidrosis. Here, the doctor will disconnect and/or destroy the nerves associated with the excessive sweating. We may put you under a local or general anesthetic while we perform some of these treatments.

Causes

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

As our body temperatures rise and our nervous system is stimulated, our sweat glands activate to help cool and calm us down. Sometimes, nerve signals are damaged or don’t work properly, typically in the underarms, soles, palms, and even face. This condition is referred to as primary hyperhidrosis and doesn’t have a direct medical cause. However, we do know that it can be hereditary.

Secondary hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, typically results from antidepressants and pain relievers, as well as health conditions, like diabetes, hot flashes due to menopause, infections, nervous system disorders, and problems with the thyroid.
