Mohs Surgery

Hearing that you have skin cancer is frightening news, and thinking about the intensive treatment you have to undergo adds another level of anxiety. However, at Palm Beach Dermatology Group, we can perform Mohs surgery at our Delray Beach location. This non-invasive procedure cuts away thin layers of skin, removing the cancer until there are no more signs of it.

Mohs surgery doesn’t affect the surrounding healthy skin and reduces the need for other skin procedures. Most of our patients can go home immediately afterward and experience minimal side effects. Learn more when you call our office at (561) 499 0660.

An Overview of Mohs Surgery We Offer in
Delray Beach

According to Mayo Clinic, the purpose of Mohs surgery is to treat skin cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Essentially, you may be a suitable candidate if:

Mohs Surgery - Palm Beach Dermatology Group

  • Your cancer came back.

  • You have an aggressive form of skin cancer.

  • The cancer has a high risk of coming back.

  • This cancer is large or spreads quickly.

  • It is not clear how far the cancer has spread.

  • Cancer affects the nerves.

When you undergo Mohs surgery, the surgeon will give you an aesthetic to numb the affected area. Then, they take a scalpel to remove the visible portion of the cancer and cut away at a thin layer of skin under and around the cancer. The surgeon will observe this piece of tissue to determine if and where there is more cancer. If they find more cancer, they will continue with the procedure, removing another layer of skin until your skin is cancer-free.

Once the procedure is over, the doctor may stitch the wound closed, cover it with a flap of skin, or let it heal on its own, depending on the depth of the wound. You should be out of our office in four hours, but your physician may recommend you plan for the procedure to take the entire day.
