About

Types of Skin Cancer

According to Mayo Clinic, skin cancer is caused by the irregular growth of skin cells. The three main types of skin cancer include:

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Most patients notice basal cell carcinoma on their neck and face, as these areas are regularly exposed to the sun. If you notice any of the following symptoms, you may want to have a doctor look at your skin:

  • A brown or flesh-colored scar-like mark
  • A sore that bleeds or scabs and heals but comes back
  • A bump that looks pearly or waxy

Benefits of a Body Lift in South Florida

Squamous cell carcinoma generally appears on the face, ears, and hands. Symptoms may include:

  • A flat, scaly spot on the skin
  • A red, swollen lump

Melanoma

Melanoma can occur anywhere on the skin, and non-cancerous moles can turn cancerous. You could have melanoma if you notice:

  • Your mole changes in color or size
  • You develop a lesion that has an irregular border
  • You have a large brown area of skin with darker brown spots surrounding it
  • A painful spot that burns or itches

We Offer at Palm Beach
Dermatology Group

Once we’ve assessed your condition and medical history, your doctor can recommend a customized treatment plan. Depending on the diagnosis, you may benefit from one of the following treatments:

  • MOHS surgery: Your surgeon will use a scalpel to cut away thin layers of skin until the cancer is entirely removed.
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT): This two-stage treatment involves the use of drugs called photosynthesizers to get rid of pre-cancer and cancerous cells. We use light to activate the photosynthesizers and prompt your immune system to begin fighting the cancer.
  • Benign mole and growth removal: Some spots are non-cancerous, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have them removed. Our doctor can surgically remove benign moles and growths or shave them with a double-blade razor.

We want you to be as comfortable as possible, so we’ll ensure you know what to expect throughout treatment.
