About
What Is a Breast
Augmentation?

A breast augmentation, also known as a mammoplasty, is a surgery that enhances the size of the breasts. Usually, women who want this surgery come to us because:

  • They have low self-confidence or self-esteem because of their smaller breasts.
  • One breast is smaller than the other.
  • They feel as though their breasts are not proportionate to the rest of their body.
  • Their breasts have changed their shape due to weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Should we deem you a good candidate for the procedure, we’ll go over what you want and what we can do. For example, we’ll discuss the options for implants. Would you prefer saline or silicone? Teardrop or round shape? Textured or smooth? Sometimes, we can perform liposuction by transferring fat from other parts of your body (e.g., belly, back, thighs, or flanks) to your breasts.

We can also talk about the different surgical techniques and what we would recommend for you.

What Does a Breast Augmentation Entail?

Depending on what your doctor decides, you may go under local anesthesia, so you’re awake for the surgery, but your chest area is numbed. In most cases, however, they perform the surgery while the patient is asleep due to general anesthesia.

Mayo Clinic affirms that your physician will make an incision in one of three places:

  • Under the arm
  • At the crease under the breast
  • Around the nipple

Then, they will separate your breast tissue from the muscles and other connective tissue in your chest, creating a pocket in front or behind the pectoral muscle, which is the most outer muscle of your chest wall. The doctor then puts the implant in this pocket.

If they’re using a saline implant, it will be empty, and they’ll fill it up with sterile water once it’s securely in place. On the other hand, silicone implants already have gel in them. Once the surgery is over, the doctor will seal the incisions with surgical tape or sutures.

Post-Breast
What Post-Breast Augmentation
Surgery Is Like

After your breast augmentation, we might have you wear a sports bra or a compression bandage to support the new positioning of your breasts. According to Cleveland Clinic, the recovery period for a breast augmentation can take anywhere from six to eight weeks.

Plan to take a few weeks off work, too, especially if you have a physically demanding job that keeps your heart rate high. Since your breasts will be so sensitive, any physical contact or jarring movement can feel very painful. We’ll give you pain medications since you may deal with side effects, such as:

  • Swelling and soreness around your chest for a few weeks
  • Bruising
  • Numbness
  • Scarring from the incision marks, but they will mostly fade over time

If you experience shortness of breath, notice redness on your breasts, or have a fever, these signs may indicate an infection. Do not ignore them and call our office right away.

Prepare
How to Prepare
for a Breast
Augmentation

Every woman is different, but generally speaking, your surgeon will recommend that before your breast augmentation, you:

  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid eating or drinking certain things
  • Get a blood test
  • Get a mammogram
  • Take a prescribed medication or abstain from taking certain medications
  • Adjust your typical medicinal routine
  • Make arrangements for family members to help you with your daily routine
  • Stop using any recreational drugs

Our team can assess your condition and explain whether this procedure is right for you.

If You Can Breastfeed
After Undergoing a Breast Augmentation

“Can I still breastfeed if I get a breast augmentation?” is probably the most common question we receive from women who are interested in this procedure. The short answer is yes. However, it can affect milk production. It really depends on where the doctor places the implant.

Cleveland Clinic says that if the implant is below the muscle, it affects milk production less than if it were above. Women who choose to have the doctor make the incision around the nipple might also notice a decrease in milk supply.

If you plan to breastfeed after your surgery, please bring up this concern when you visit us for your consultation.
