Causes

What Causes Melasma?

Melasma occurs primarily in women and is often related to changes in hormone levels, such as when they begin taking birth control pills or are pregnant. Melasma usually appears on the face as blotches, patches, or freckle-like spots that are tan, brown, or grayish. According to Cleveland Clinic, they are most common on the cheeks, forehead, chin, and above the mouth but can also occur on the arms, neck, and chest.

Melasma often disappears after the woman stops birth control or delivers the baby. However, this is not always the case. Our dermatologists can recommend an effective treatment to fade the spots if they remain.

Treatments

What Melasma Treatment
Is Available From
Palm Beach Dermatology Group?

Palm Beach Dermatology Group utilizes several approaches to fade the dark spots and help prevent them from developing again. They include:

  • Laser treatments: TLight therapy might effectively reduce the appearance of brown spots and fade the dark patches. It is often used in conjunction with a more comprehensive treatment plan.

  • Topical creams: We sometimes prescribe topical medications for our patients with melasma. While some creams that claim to fade these spots are available over the counter, we caution you against using them without consulting our team.

It is important for you to understand these treatments are individualized based on your skin type and skin color. Many effective treatments for this condition are not as effective on darker skin. At the same time, those with darker skin tones are more likely to develop the brown patches characteristic of the chronic condition.

What Melasma Symptoms
Will Treatment Address?

While the only symptom of melasma is the brown spots and patches, there are other things you should know about this diagnosis. Treatment options can fade the spots until they disappear, but there is no cure for the common skin condition. It can recur, often because of excessive sun exposure. Using sunscreen and protecting your skin is vital to maintaining healthy skin.
