Photodynamic Therapy for Acne in South Florida

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective treatment for many acne cases, even some that have not responded to other treatments. At Palm Beach Dermatology Group, our dermatologists offer patients a wide range of acne treatments. That includes PDT, which involves applying special medications on the skin before applying light therapy.

Our team also employs phototherapy for several other conditions. We aim to provide care that meets your needs at every point in life. Call us to schedule a visit at (561) 499-0660.

What Causes
Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs because of clogged sebaceous glands. These glands make much-needed oil. However, sometimes they make too much. The oil clogs the pores, especially when combined with shed skin cells, bacteria, and other debris. These clogged glands and pores cannot continue to function properly, so they swell and become inflamed. This is acne.

Most people have breakouts at some point in their lives. Some, however, have significantly worse acne than others. For many, the breakouts lead to significant scarring, pitting, and discoloration. Contributors to acne include:

  • Hormonal changes, especially in young women
  • Certain skincare routines

Many old wives’ tales talk about the causes of acne. According to Mayo Clinic, greasy foods, chocolate, and stress do not contribute to causing this common condition.

Who Qualifies for Photodynamic Therapy
(PDT) for Acne in South Florida?

While we often think of teenagers with acne, many people of all ages have concerns about these bumps. We certainly help teenagers manage and treat their acne, but we also see patients well into their 20s and 30s. Sometimes, we even see seniors with acne.

Photodynamic therapy might not be the best option for every patient with acne. Our dermatologists assess each case and recommend the best treatments based on their unique facts. Sometimes, topical treatments or medications might offer the same benefits as light photodynamic therapy.

Photodynamic therapy is often prescribed by our doctors and used in our office to address difficult-to-treat acne and lasting scars from previous breakouts. This could include acne with cysts and nodules, which tends to scar the worst. We could prescribe other approaches for scarring, including fractional CO2 laser treatments, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.

Symptoms
What Symptoms
Does PDT Address?

At Palm Beach Dermatology Group, our doctors offer many options to address medical and cosmetic issues related to acne and scarring. The goal of this treatment is to clear the skin, reduce the occurrence of acne, and fade scarring. Photodynamic therapy is an advanced treatment that has shown success and benefits over other treatments for many of our patients.

  • Kills bacteria: Kills bacteria that contribute to acne and scarring
  • Shrinks glands: Reduces the size of oil-producing sebaceous glands
  • Does not scar: Does not cause additional scarring
  • Fades scars: Treats and fades existing acne scars and facial acne lesions
  • Manages other conditions: Helps to treat many co-occurring skin conditions
  • Supports multi-faceted treatment: Is often used in conjunction with other medications and systemic treatments

Common questions our patients who struggle with acne ask us include the following:

Why Choose Palm Beach Dermatology Group?

At Palm Beach Dermatology Group, our doctors treat patients like family. From the moment you walk into the office, you will feel at home in our comfortable waiting area. We treat everything from normal skin with an increased risk for certain skin cancer types to confounding skin conditions your general practitioner could not diagnose.

We know how to help every patient find the answers they need for their medical or cosmetic concerns regarding their skin. Because we treat every patient as an individual and do not prescribe one-size-fits-all treatments, our patients report a high level of treatment success.

How Long Will It Take to Get
an Appointment?

Many people worry that we will not accept new patients, or that they will need to wait months before seeing a doctor. Our team understands how important it is for you to get the care you need. We are open, accepting new patients, and scheduling in-office and telehealth appointments now.

Our office also respects your time. You can expect only a short wait to see a doctor and a fast follow-up when waiting for test results.

Are There Other Options for
Acne Treatment?

Our dermatologists prescribe various acne treatments based on your unique needs and symptoms. The actual treatment our doctors prescribe will be based on your symptoms, details, and other related health concerns.

During your initial screening visit with our team, we will assess your needs and develop a plan to address your acne. It may or may not include light photodynamic therapy.

Is PDT Safe?

PDT pairs a topical medication with light energy to treat acne and scarring. While this is a safe and effective therapy for acne for most patients, other treatments might better suit your needs. There is a chance of application site skin reactions that could prevent us from continuing this type of therapy. However, most side effects are relatively minor and manageable.
